Residence Requirement

Refugees may be legally required to reside within one one state (Bundesland) or a specific city under certain conditions, depending on the legal status of the asylum seeker (cf. Residenzpflicht or Wohnsitzauflage). If you want to travel or move to a certain city or state within or outside of Germany (e.g. to see you family), it may be best to contact your Refugee Advice Office first. They can explain you the legal situation, inform you about any conditions, exceptions and tell you, whether you can depart without damaging your chances within your asylum procedure or losing your residence permit.
